Double-clicking: the most common failure. A worn switch bounces, sending two clicks for one press — deadly in games and infuriating in file managers. Two down-events under ~80 ms apart from a single press is the fingerprint. Scroll skipping: a dirty or worn encoder scrolls backwards a notch or skips — visible here as wheel deltas that don't match your motion. Polling rate: how often the mouse reports position — 125 Hz (8 ms) on basic mice, 1000 Hz (1 ms) standard for gaming, with 4000–8000 Hz on recent high-end models. Higher polling means fresher positions and smoother tracking, at slightly higher CPU cost.

Sometimes. Increasing debounce time in the mouse software masks it at the cost of a few ms latency; blowing out the switch with contact cleaner buys months; the real fix is replacing the switch or the mouse. Warranty often covers it.
Browsers coalesce mouse events to the display's refresh rate for rendering, but the events API still exposes high-rate motion — our estimate uses event timestamps, so 1000 Hz mice read near 1000 on most systems. Treat it as an estimate, not a lab measurement.
For most people, no — 1000 Hz is already a 1 ms interval. At very high refresh rates (360 Hz+) with high sensitivity, some players perceive smoother micro-tracking. It costs CPU and battery.
